We use the TT files created by TTUTIL with networked printers daily. I guess it is unnecessary, though, if a flat file works as well. I use the TTUTIL approach, because the same file can be used as a device type file in NMMGR or as an environment file in a FILE command.

No, No, No!
Environment files created by TTUTIL are only appropriate for serial
printers. They will *not* work with networked printers. In fact, you don't
even need to use TTUTIL to create environment files for serial printers,
either. A simple flat ASCII file containing your escape sequences will do.
