It actually has very restricted vision, but did manage to catch a glimpse of
its foe in time. It was...
anemone of the peephole.
But the boring answer is probably that it could feel characteristic
vibrations in the water as the predator approached. I'm sure Wirt will soon
be posting whichever volume of the Encyclopaedia Britannica describes
this.... :-)
