HP Forms Corporatewide Linux Initiative
San Jose, Calif. -- Count Hewlett-Packard as the latest
company to jump on the Linux bandwagon, as the company
detailed its Linux strategy at the inaugural LinuxWorld
Conference & Expo here.
The company, which had already announced plans to support
Linux on several fronts, said it has formed a corporatewide
initiative to support porting of systems and applications to the
operating platform.
HP has formed the Open Source Solution Operation, which will
look to see that the company offers tools that extend its
application development platform to work with HP-UX,
Windows NT and Linux.
That will be achieved through the development of Linux-
compatible APIs and tools, said Wayne Caccamo, HP's Internet
planning manager.
Furthermore, HP has signed up with Puffin Group
International, a software development and consulting firm, to
port Linux to HP's PA-RISC server platform. Also, HP said
that its Firehunter service-level management application is now
available on Linux. By Jeffrey Schwartz
