I always had the impression that the Open Source philosophy is
more a matter of contributing than demanding something from someone
else. Kind of "oh, this issue is something I'd like to see fixed or
enhanced, and it bugs be enough to get my hands dirty... so I will
contribute the results to the community, hoping that other pepople
will do the same in other areas, and that I'll benefit from their
contributions some day".

Don't take me wrong. I'm not criticizing here. Just sharing thoughts.

Oh, and regarding the risks of not getting the latest gcc compiler
versions... it happens that I typically used a fairly old version for
all the stuff that I ported... mainly because I didn't want to fetch
the fairly big downloads from Jazz on a regular basis...

I don't recall that the oldish gcc versions caused any trouble for me.
