Jeff,

If I create a command file that executes a program, then the command file
stays open until I exit the program and let the commands complete, granted
it's closed at that point.

Thanx,
        Jon

One key is the *number* of UDCs that are cataloged. Way back in the
classic days I presented a paper on System Configuration at either Orlando
or Anaheim (81 or 83? don't have my proceedings in front of me). In
those days, data segments were at a premium for larger shops, and it
turns out that each catalogued UDC took a data segment at logon time.
I had a discussion with Jeff Vance at a more recent HPWorld about this
because he didn't believe me :-) But it was true, at least of classic
MPE. I don't know the overhead of MPE/iX.

Command files are presumably opened then closed, you only have the
directory search to find the file. UDCs stay opened (with the file
overhead associated with open files on MPE/iX - a new mapped VSM object?)

Command files are also easier to change on the fly.
