The screen dumps were Listings from PowerHouse Quick screens. I used that as
an example. No reports from the HP3000 would print when this problem arose
regardless of how they were produced. SHOWOUT DEV=NP4172 or NP4173 showed one
report for each printer in PRINT status and the remainder queued up in READY
status. There were no replies pending.

However, I believe that I have discovered the problem and applied the remedy.
It remains to be seen if this really solves the problem.

All our printers are Lexmark MS711dn's. I compared the settings of the two
problem printers to the others and discovered that the PCL and PS autoswitch
feature had been disabled on both but was active on all the others.

I reset the two problem printers to have those features activated. So far we
have not had a recurrence. Apparently within the past few weeks both printers
had been serviced. I can only infer that the service tech set those features
off for some reason.

I cannot explain why the printers would work, then stop, then start again after
a delay that sometimes lasted as much as 30 minutes. I speculate that other
print jobs arriving from other systems somehow set the printers into PS mode,
which stopped the HP3000 from printing to them, and that later another print
job set them back to PCL, which allowed the HP3000 printing to proceed. I
cannot see how this would actually work but it is the only explanation that I
can come up with..

Regards,
