I too suddenly came to realize that these disc "hotels' were no longer
supported. In discussing this with my CE it is apparently because HP can
no longer obtain the power supplys for the box. HP could support the rest
of the box, but that doesn't mean much because the only active component is
the power supply. Our "hotels" were populated with 4GB drives too.

Our solution was to replace all the disc drives in our HP9000/989 with 4
36GB drives internal to the computer. The result was a dramatic
improvement in speed. For our HP3000/928RX we eliminated all internal
drives and the "hotel" and replaced them with an HVD external drive system
populated with 18GB 15K (RPM) drives. Again, we got a big pick up in speed.

Moral of the story is that the old 4GB drives were simply slowing down the
systems. For this reason they deserve to be obsolete. Sometimes it just
pays to replace old parts for your own good.
