Interex 1990 was in Boston. It was at this conference that HP announced they
were unbundling IMAGE/XL from the HP 3000 FOS (Fundamental Operating System.)
This meant from that day forward, a customer who bought an HP 3000 would
either have to buy IMAGE/XL separately or do without. There were many reasons
given for this move, the one that I remember was that HP was really trying to
get people to develop applications on the HP 3000 using ALLBASE/XL as opposed
to IMAGE/XL.

The users present at Interex 90 were not amused and they let HP know in no
uncertain terms during the IMAGE roundtable. The upshot of this was the
resurgence of SIGIMAGE and the rest, as they say, is history. . .

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

I know that I am not the only list member with only the sketchiest view of
what happened ten years ago at HP World in Boston, and that understanding is
gleaned from the occasional passing comment such as this. I have no alterior
motives in this, but just want to understand clearly, what exactly happened?

Yup, he is the "nice guy" who wanted to pull the plug on Image
and said so at the Boston conference.
