Unsure myself. But seeing that console request,
you could try
:FILE TAPE8;LABEL=A00002,ans
Then try tar -cvf /dev/TAPE8

or TAPE40 if you MKNOD "/dev/TAPE40 c 0 40".

Thinking that when the tape is placed online, MPE will AVR it and read
the label part for you. tar should then only see the data part.
