Tar Problems on HP

I have accidentally removed the header record from a dat cartridge. Which
not surprisingly means I cannot untar the tar. I have spoken to HP
(support) but no help. I have also tried mt and dd commands.

Eg.

 mt  -t /dev/rmt/0m -ffs 1
 (move past header)

 dd  fi=/dev/rmt/0m fo=/filename
 (this shout be d direct device read)

Still not working,
Please advise, also is there a tool or utility I may use to save my
bacon???
