Yes disc caching was developed on the S-III. Caching was never released
on them as HP wanted to promote their new systems and obviously didn't
want the users to remain on the series II/III hardware. There was also the
issue
of the S/III systems being able to scale...(so I was told...).

Disc caching was developed by John Busch and Alan Kondoff. It
was detailed in the HP Journal around 1985. These 2 engineers
were very good technically if I recall. I was fortunate to have sat in
a meeting in the labs once when both of these engineers were a part
of the HP team. Lee Courtney was in HP Marketing at the time and
coordinated the meeting, and we were joined by Nancy Anderson,
who was the Division Mgr at the time (anyone remember Nancy?).
I seem to recall that a couple years later both Busch and Kondoff
had left HP. Sometime in the late 80's one of them was tragically
killed in some sort of accident, but I don't remember who. (All this
perhaps more info than anyone probably cares to know...)
