FWIW, the relatively new PINFO CI function has ways to deal with
this. HELP PINFO shows:
...
FmtPID              string  MPE internal process ID: 'pin reuse_cnt'
 ## this is a string version of the 32 bit MPE internal PID.
...
PxPID               int     POSIX PID: 16 bit re-use cnt, 16 bit PIN
 ## this is the PID seen in the POSIX shell's ps command, for example
...
