<<Is DCE taking off for real?>>
Damfino. But I'm willing to help!
<<Is ODBC-32 enough?>>
For what? DCE is about Distributed Computing (OK so I get a "Duh!" for
that one), and ODBC is database-connectivity. How would ODBC "stand in"
for DCE?
<<What about:
Remote methods for Java.>>
RMI may well provide great capabilities some day. RPC is here, running,
now.
<<RPC (Cobra, etc.).>>
"CORBA"? Also a different focus.
<<DCOM and more recent inventions.>>
Since DCOM runs on top of DCE/RPC (though it's Microsoft's "compatible"
version, not a genuine licensed-from-OSF-later-The-Open-Group
implementation), the fit seems pretty good. In fact, DCOM could be
implemented on the 3000 (OK, so *I* wouldn't want to be the one to have
to do it) since HP also uses DCE/RPC (does anyone other than Sun use
ONC/RPC? Does Sun even use it any more?)
