Thanks a lot - works perfectly - and is fast too.
 
Would be nice if ;LISTDIR could be used as an option to :VSTORE - then you wouldn't ever have to fear overwriting files.

My favorie is to use the listdir
file equate to the tape then I do a search for a file I know wont be there.

:file t8;dev=8
:restore *t8;abc.gary.sys;listdir
