For reference material, I would suggest (since I use them myself),
"Internetworking with TCP/IP" Volumes 1 & 2, Douglase E.Comer, Prentice Hall
"TCP/IP Illustrated" Vol 1, W. Richard Stevens, Addison-Wesley, 1994
"LANS - Application of IEE/ANSI 802 Standards", Thomas Madron, Wiley, 1989
"Unix System V Network Programming",Stephen Rago, Addison-Wesley, 1993
"C Programmer's Guide to NetBIOS", W David Schwaderer, Howard Sams, 1988

Add to that the HP "NetIPC 3000/XL Programmer's Reference Manual", plus the
"Berkeley Sockets/iX Reference Manual", all the HPUX ARPA programming
reference manuals, plus any and all RFCs you can get your hand on, and
assorted trade journals like Network World, LAN Mag, etc. Some
extra-curricular training doesn't go astray, but be careful that you get
someone that teaches, and not just recites another manual. Concepts and
visualization are what its all about!

Then its just a matter of time and application.

I can get the working on the same PC, but haven't tried them simultaneously.
Hmmmm.....
