Paul,

while it may be that some hosts' FTP servers have ASCII->EBCDIC conversion
built in (likely IBM hosts), bear in mind that some fields which are not
character-oriented will not survive said conversion.  FCOPY's perfectly
capable of doing the translation, and provides tools for specifying exactly
which characters to convert.

of course this doesn't address your fixed/variable "problem", though I note
that your transferred byte-count seems correct: 6*180=1080.
