We have a 979-400 with 2 gig memory and 24 mirrored drives (total of 42
in RAID 1 configuration with 3 hot spares). We bumped up our memory
from
1 gig to 2 gig several months prior to the upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0,
but
to address a problem totally unrelated to the upgrade. We average
about
230 user per day, but have had Disk I/O issues, also unrelated to the
upgrade. HP told us that 1 gig would have been sufficient for the
upgrade to 6.0. Our increase in memory was to address cache.

I can't offer you the real world experience you are looking for, but I
will
offer my perspective as the HP CSY person responsible for 6.5
performance.
Here is an excerpt from my talk at HPWorld last month on this very
subject:

"Rumors that 6.5 takes huge amounts of memory to run are simply NOT
true.
Each user (session, network connection, or job) should require
about
the
same amount of memory on 6.5 as on 5.5 or 6.0. The 6.5 operating
system
itself uses slightly more memory than 6.0, as should be expected
when
   adding new features.

"If your system has at least 128MB, and has enough memory to run
well at
all times on 5.5 or 6.0, and you are not changing anything else,
then
updating to 6.5 should NOT require more memory."

Even though I work for a company that sells memory :), I can assure
you
that there is nothing about the "64-bit" nature of 6.5 that uses much
memory. On a 1GB system, you are not going to notice a difference,
assuming what you have said above, "we never experience any
performance
issues," is true now on 5.5.

I wish you the best with whatever OS release you decide is best!
