The re-indexing magic was started on the Ecometry list.
Re-indexing is normally a single threaded CPU intensive task. The trick
(magic), is to break the job into multiple jobs, with read only access.
If you have 4 CPU's, break it into 4 jobs.
Your millege may vary, you need enough Memory and I/O bandwidth to get a 1/4th
reduction.
Also, I find this works really well with Ecometry, and not so well with Amysis.
