We have been using x12 formatted files.  A good tool is VB .net using the split command to break these files apart.  This could be done in COBOL with the unstring command.

We use the Biztalk mapper and have had success.  

The Microsoft product BizTalk return error messages that do give a clue as to the problem.  The documentation is not very helpful.  BizTalk 2004 doesn't look anything like Biztalk 2002.  

I have gotten help from the BizTalk list server and we have BizTalk working well.  I thought the cost of BizTalk was inexpensive.

VB .net is a better product and a lot of fun to code!

 This is a property we are currently cleaning up to put on the market, It
has been foreclosed upon. I don't have a list price yet, but I can tell you
