I was in Jedda SA in 1997.  I drove past with my Saudi friend the Desalinization plant.  

A very large building.  They use crude oil to boil the sea water and distillate the water.

The Red sea is the saltiest body of water, Other than Salt lake in Utah, I have ever been swimming.  I figured they were putting the salt back.  

Some of the best scuba diving, the coral was untouched.
