*********RANT ALERT ON*********************************************************

This is just a word of caution to anyone attempting to connect a Laserjet 5N
to an HP3000. I have just spent a frustrating 2 weeks trying to figure out
why my
new Laserjet 5N can't be printed to from my HP3000. It seems that the
printer comes with an HP JetDirect card(part# J2550B,firmware version
A.05.05) that will not allow the HP3000 to connect. A getsnmp error is
recorded when you try. I got new card here at a cost of $85 under the HP
express exchange problem only to find the same problem with it. I removed a
JetDirect card(part# J2550A,firmware version A.04.09) from my Deskjet 1200,
configured it and apart from the concole message saying the the printer does
not support PJL(anyone out there remember when HP introduced this as the
greatest thing since sliced bread on the Laserjet 4 and told us we could
never live without it even though it wreaked havoc with our downloaded
macros), it prints just fine. When HP introduced the network printing
solution, I questioned the wisdom of basing it on a proprietary solution
instead of LPR at the Toronto Interex meeting and was told that the
Jetdirect was a defacto standard - so much for standards....
