Fellow listers,

A user accessing a web site that I support, indicated that he was having
the following problem:

He would activate a link (using IE) that corresponded to an Excel spread
sheet and would select the "open" option when IE would prompt for 'open'
'save', etc. The spread sheet would be opened up (within the browser). He
then would proceed to 'fill in' some fields and then try to save the spread
sheet by selecting the "save as" option under the "file" tab. He would
then be presented with a 'pop-up' screen asking for a username and
password, in order to proceed, he would then select 'cancel' and would then
be presented with his "My documents" directory where he could save the
file.

What he reported as a problem today, was the fact that after selecting
"cancel" he would be returned to the spread sheet, instead of being
presented with his 'local' directory tree and the ability to save the file
locally.

BTW. If Netscape is used the "save as" selection, bring up immediately the
'local' directory tree. (We are however being required to adopt IE as the
standard browser).

I guess when 'save as' is selected in IE, it attempts to save the file back
in the web server and since the user does not have the correct permissions,
IE asks for a username and password that would have the correct
permissions.

Does anyone know of configuration setting that would cause IE to always use
the local client as the 'object' of its 'save as' function.

Regards
Paul Christidis
