I once (indirectly) saw HP's sales person policies at work.
This regional office had a new sales guy sent to them. He had all the right
experience on paper, but he didnt look the part - short, a little tubby,
balding, a shake in one hand. The only thing right was his age - early 40s.
Anyway, they set him to work learning the HP market, sales pitch etc, and
sent him out to work. He was just starting to get some sales under his belt,
and ramp up, and somebody decided he just didnt fit the HP image of a
salesman, so they let him go.
He moved to DEC, selling into Fed Gov, and in his first year there was top
seller.
But HP didnt need that sort of salesman.
