I think that the card is much closer to $150 than $300.  Also Extended
Systems also sells a HP3000 "smart" device that does the status checking
just like the HP23xx printers (printer type 22 or 26 I believe).  That
card is a little bit pricey since it has a much more limited audience.

Async might be the only way to go in remote places.
