Hi fellow listers,

Chris correctly reminded everyone that "every vendor is free to have
whatever pricing structure they want". Cognos, and for that matter all
other software vendors, are free to use HP tier structure, their own tier
structure, user-based pricing, flat pricing, whatever.

That being said, HP e3000 software tiers used by Hewlett-Packard have been
changed on May 1st this year. 918s and 928s belong to Tier 1, option 310.
929s, 939s and 979s belong to Tier 4, a.k.a. option 330. I cannot think of
actively sold systems today that belong to Tiers 2 or 3.

This is the scheme that is used in Europe, but I'm confident it's
consistent all over the world. For practical reasons, we at Appic follow
the HP tier structure.

Every vendor is free to have what ever pricing structure they want.
Many choose to follow the HP tier structure, or perhaps did at one time.
Others have or or less tiers.

Recently I priced upgrading from a 977 to a 979-200. For many of
the software vendors I use, there was no differance. Even though a
979-200 has more power than a 989, it remained in the lower price queue.
Others charged more because I added a second processor.

Still other vendors have moved strictly to a user based fee. 50 users,
any computer, same price.

Within price tiers, there is also a great differance between vendors.
One had its products priced at $5000, $6000, and $7000 for three different
mid-level price tiers, where another was more like $5000, $10000 and
$20000.
Some charge extra per cpu, others don't care. Basically, you will need a
price
quote from each and every software vendor you deal with.

I am getting conflicting reports on what tier the 928 and 929
belong to.  HP (telesales) told me they are both tier 3 or 320 what
ever that means.  Cognos says 928 is a 320 and 929 is a 340.
I.E. 928 cognos upgrade from my 937 is 4k and the 929 cognos
upgrade from my 937 is 24k.
Can anyone shed a little more light on this?
