I checked into the text of some of the Groupwise messages and found this
little gem (excuse all the header noise):

Aha... the next to last line... "Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to
8bit by cecasun.utc.edu".

So the message text is being sent as a quoted-printable MIME attachment,
and my local copy (for me) is being autoconverted to 8bit for me by
sendmail (or is it popper?).  So, if you get mail directly from Listserv
and don't have an intervening sendmail setup for these conversions, your
mail reader doesn't understand quoted-printable.
