why leave the console logged on?  i guess it's one of those 'it depends' kinda things.

if the console is in a secure area, i think the console should be left logged on. (don't forget, it may be the only device with a serial connection to the system!).

perhaps, otoh, if you do little tape handling (and/or all your tape drives are configured for autoreply) or forms printing, maybe it makes more sense to not have the console logged on.

i'd think a side-effect of not having the console logged on is that no one/nothing is actually watching the messages on the console.  i realize having the operator logged on is no guarantee either (ask me about my operators....) but i do think the inverse is true.  and if no one/nothing is watching, then how do you know what's really happening on the system?        - d
