Many of you have written (and condemned) about migrations from MANMAN on the
HP3000 to SAP R/3 to UNIX systems. Although I wholeheartedly agree with the
reliability of the HP3000 and the success of packages such as MANMAN (and
many others) on it, companies do exist that have successfully migrated from
the HP3000.

Who are they? I can name five of them from my own experience.

Five customers of our AventX MPE (formerly FAX/3000) have VERY SUCCESSFULLY
migrated from MANMAN on the HP3000 to SAP R/3 on UNIX systems such as the
HP9000, IBM RS6000, and Sun Solaris. These include several sites of 3Com
Corporation (including Corporate, MSL, Palm, and US Robotics), Banyan
Systems, Carlisle Syntec, Domtar Inc. (several sites), and Honeywell
(originally divisions of Allied Signal prior to the merger with Honeywell).
Each of these customers continue to use our solution (AventX UNIX) as easily
as they had on MPE.

These customers migrated from MPE to UNIX using outside consultants and
systems integrators. In some cases, staff turnover was high. In others,
very low. In all cases, operations and programming staff dramatically
increased to support the new solution. For example, one customer went from
three IT people (1 programmer, 1 system manager, and 1 operator) on ONE
HPe3000 to 14 IT people on NINE HP9000s. OK you can do the math of how much
money they now spend for salaries and benefits of the increased IT staff.

Yes, I love the HP3000 as much as anyone. However, it is time to face
reality and realize that HP3000 customers WILL move to alternative solutions
on UNIX, Linux, AS/400, Windows, etc. STR Software embraced these systems
starting in 1992 and have provided an easy migration path for our customers
with nearly identical solutions for them on MPE, UNIX, and Linux. Windows
is another story!

As a staunch vendor of products for the HP3000, I encourage you to look for
the GOOD rather than the BAD of migrations. They do exist and Polyanna does
too! (Of course, failed migrations do exist usually from poor management
and implementation by the wrong people or companies hired for the job. And
I can give you examples of these regardless of the original application on
the HP3000.)

Sincerely,

Ben Bruno
President
