I just wanted to thank everyone that responded to my questions.
To let you know where things are at:
1. HP is coming out next week to replace a SIMM.
2. The CD-ROM is in fact installed and configured correctly,
I just didn't expect the strange error message at startup.
I was able to read a LaserRom CD using Holger's CDCOPY
utility (Thanks Holger, I would still not know if it was working
or not without it!)
3. I now have access to the previously off limits SYSDIAG utilities
by getting the password from HP. By using MEMDIAG, I was
able to see that my memory problem was in fact "a problem",
and not a stray decaying particle that happened to smash into
the "right spot".

This list is the best thing to happen to the 3000 since the 3000 itself!

Thanks again everyone
