Not an HP printer. It is a Ricoh! What do I do different for a Ricoh.

was the printer spooled out while your were doing this work? if so, try stopping the
spooler for this printer (it may take a bit of mucking as it appears something is
waiting to print....)...count to 10 (why? it's good for your blood pressure :-) and
then start the spooler.
i believe the 'rule' (probably john burke's rule :-) is to make sure spooling is
stopped when changing npconfig. the system doesn't handle the change dynamically. by
having the spooling stopped, then changing npconfig, then restarting the spooling --
the system will re-read npconfig and all is well. - d
