Ok, remind me.
I've got a new analyst migrating from IBM MVS environment. He's reading
the manual and discovers MODE 2 open and asks what's the difference
between MODE 2 & Mode 1?
Since we only use modes 1 & 5 on our production machine, and Quest
opens
the shadowed DB in mode 4, we've never had the need to use/explore
other
modes.

Gary,
Mode 2 on DBOPEN allows update capability with concurrent update. It
is compatible with modes 2 and 6. It will allow DBUPDATE but not DBPUT
or DBDELETE. It is the Image equivalent of FOPEN with aoptions (12:4) =
0101. In the real world, I have never seen or heard of anyone actually
using mode 2. Also, if you use CIUPDATE, you cannot use mode 2,
because implicit in a CIUPDATE is a delete and put to the changed chains
or sort items. Congratulations on having a staff member who is willing to
crack a manual open before coming to you as the answer man.
