While the obvious answer to this could be that the printer is offline, it is
not necessarily so.
In HP-IB printing (CIPER protocol) the system and the printer would
communicate things like offline, out of paper, paper jam, etc.
But with serial printing (printer types 22 and 26 in NMMGR), the status
checking amounts to nothing more than a status request from the spooler
(<esc>?dc1) and an acknowledgment from the printer (ctrl-F). If the printer
does not respond then the system will spit out the aforementioned messages.
In this context, offline really means the printer did not respond. The
reasons could be that the printer really is offline, it is turned off, the
cable is loose or broken, or the DTC port needs to be reset.
This is one place where network printing really shines, if used in
combination with Syslog. By setting up your network printers to use the
HP3000 as their Syslog server they will report their status in plain text.
Spooler message:
10:22/57/Output spooler, LDEV #800: Operator intervention required.
Printer reports the following device status:
[PAPER_OUT PAPER_PROBLEM OFFLINE]
Native Mode Spooler message 9658
Syslog messages:
10:31/#J19/84/Oct 1 10:31:40 198.x.x.x printer: error cleared
10:31/#J19/84/Oct 1 10:31:41 198.x.x.x printer: offline or intervention
needed
10:31/#J19/84/Oct 1 10:31:44 198.x.x.x printer: paper out
10:31/#J19/84/Oct 1 10:31:50 198.x.x.x printer: cover/door open
10:32/#J19/84/Oct 1 10:32:37 198.x.x.x printer: error cleared
Now if we could just get the spooler to keep up with the latest PJL of the
newer printers this would be a very powerful setup.
