What is there that's special about a DTC that you couldn't get with NS/VT or
telnet? It's hard for me to imagine that either the HP3000 or the terminal
emulator could possibly care.

The only caveat that I know of at the moment is that where the host
application is actively looking for the LF character in a CRLF pair and the
current implementation of telnet on the HP3000 is stripping off the LF, but
that's more of a mistake than a deeply seated philosophical reason why only
DTCs can be used.
