I use Avast! for day to day ‘always on’ interactive checking, and Malwarebytes for a once a week thorough scan.

Both free, though both would like to sell you something more comprehensive, all sorts of ancillary services in the case of Avast!, and their ‘always on’ interactive checking in the case of Malwarebytes.

An essential further component in keeping malware at bay is to ensure your WinOS and applications are up to date, so Belarc Advisor, Patch My PC and SuMo are part of my armoury also.

Belarc Advisor will check if Windows and your utility software is patched up to date or not. Patch My PC will check a range of your applications, and update them if required.
SuMo will check a wider range, but you have to update anything it finds manually. So I always run PMPC first 😛

I do not update my drivers with any Driver utility; I update them only as advised by the makers of my laptop, or of the affected peripheral (e.g. my printer) where I am pretty sure this won’t clash with maker-specific aspects of my laptop.

I do not defrag my SSDs.

The only tool I use other than the above, or a regular basis, is CCleaner, to keep my machine free of cruft.

None of the above costs me a penny.
