I would venture to say both you and Craig, and perhaps some others as
well, have failed to detect the nuanced odor of sardonicism in Wirt's

I don't get that meaning at all.
It doesn't necessarily mean Wirt "IS" a Republican,
it only means he is voting that way ... this time.
(It is his citizenship privilege.)
