Thanks to all of the many folks that responded to my plea!

Last night we pinned the problem on POSIX.  One vt session in a posix
shell doing <supply your own mundane task> a recursive file copy to the
bit-bucket completely took over the 928. Samba could occasionaly get in
a word, a second posix shell was out of the question.  HP's on the
problem now, Samba is off the hook, and I'm not interviewing with
convenience stores.  :)
