Hi HP3000-L,

The OpenSSL developers removed their prohibition on USA code contributions last
week, and since OpenSSL 0.9.6 was fortuitously still in the beta cycle, I was
able to get MPE support submitted in time for the production release of 0.9.6
which you can now download in source code form at:

        http://www.openssl.org/

OpenSSL is a library for creating SSL applications, but it's also much more
than that. It's also a general purpose crypto library containing a wide
variety of algorithms. A high level command line utility is also included that
provides PKI, S/MIME, general file encryption/decryption capabilities, and much
more.

If you've been wanting to SSL-enable your MPE applications but have been put
off by the high cost of licensing the RSA BSAFE SSL-C toolkit, you might want
to take a look at OpenSSL now, especially since the RSA patent has now expired
and you can now use the OpenSSL version of the RSA algorithm legally in the
USA. But note that OpenSSL isn't supported by HP, so if formal support is an
issue, SSL-C may be worth the $$$.

Please note that strong crypto may not be legal in all countries, and that
certain OpenSSL algorithms must be licensed from their copyright holders before
use. It is your responsibility to read all of the OpenSSL documentation to
determine what may or may not be legal in your own country.

Due to USA BXA export control issues that I want to completely avoid, I will
not be making any OpenSSL binary distributions available from bixby.org. If
you wish to use OpenSSL on MPE, you need to download the GNU gcc compiler from
http://jazz.external.hp.com/src/gnu/gnuframe.html and compile the OpenSSL
source yourself.
