This depends upon the terminal emulation that you are using.  That's assuming
that you are going to still use some type of terminal emulation.  If I
remember correctly (very old knowledge), HP escape sequences for this were
'esc:' and 'esc;' to turn or or off echoing of typed characters.  Don't
remember which was which though.  someone else probably knows better but no
matter what, this assumes that you are still going to be doing HP terminal
emulation.
