Todd,

I've not started using PFE so I'm not sure there, but I have no
trouble with DOS EDIT at all. My initial thoughts are that you have
a permissions problem between the Samba Userid in use, and
where you are trying to edit. As a test, try logging onto the
3000 with the same user that you've setup for the particular
session your connecting to (ie if your connecting to the "guest"
session as defined in smb.conf, and it uses the "mgr.samba"
mpe userid, then logon as mgr.samba). Now simply try
editing the same file using vi and see if it can read/write
without incident.
If that works ok, go ahead and send a few more details
(like your smb.conf file, the location your attempting to
read/write to, and the permissions set on that directory hierarchy,
how your running smbd along with the inetdcnf file if your running
it under inetd, etc.).

As for your question about running it under INETD or not, there
are pros and cons to both methods. If you use INETD, it takes
care of simple authentication for you (via the inetdsec.net.sys),
and it will initiate the daemon when an outside request for that
port is received. This also means that connections are a little
slower since smbd isn't reading the port directly. When using
it as a standalone job, you must make sure you handle any
security issues via the smb.conf file, but connections are quicker
since you are not being serviced via inetd, but rather directly.
Plus this also eats up one more job slot if that matters to you.

Michael L Gueterman

Subject: [HP3000-L] Samba question

I just loaded Samba on my system and was able to get it to work (my
system
is running 5.5 and my pc NT4.0), however, I'm having a few problems. I
can
create a file on my system - no problem, but if the file already exists
on the
3000, some editors won't behave. PFE won't open any file that exists on
the system, unless it created it. Dos EDIT will open an existing file,
but
seems to have problems saving it back.

Also, what is the difference between running SMBD under INETD or
using the SMB Monitor job? I think Samba's great and am eagerly
awaiting for official HP support!!!

Thanks, Todd Boyd
