I have had something like this happen in the past and found that if a
VOLUTIL
"format" quits before completion (power, abort, etc.), a way to recover the
disk
is to find a PC with an Adaptec SCSI card, hook the drive in question to the
SCSI bus (set a unique SCSI address first), boot the system and enter
the Adaptec diagnostic when the SCSI controller prompt occurs. At that
point, assuming the diagnostic identifies the drive on the list of devices,
select
"format" and wait for several hours till it completes. Then move the drive
back
to the 3000 and try it again. It's worked for me several times (once with
the
exact same drive that you have), so hopefully it will get you going. If
that drive
actually is bad, it is pretty easy/cheap to replace (the last two I bought
were
$19.95 each including a 30-day warranty. Both work great after the
aformentioned
format operation. I think there is an offline diagnostic that will
low-level format
seemingly dead drives on the '3000, but I can't remember where it is
(diagnostics
tape perhaps?). The PC/Adaptec method is a lot easier for me though, and
the
'3000 doesn't have to be shut down to fool around with the offline
diagnostics.
Good Luck,
Winston
