Earlier I replied privately to Shirl that I must have been wrong. I
thought I had sent the message to the list as well, but I had not. This is
a serendipitous event, because I would now be forced to retract my
retraction.

Upon further reflection and trips down memory lane, I have uncovered a
recollection that actually supports both Shirl's and my statements.

Shirl says that they upgraded the series 33 to a 48 and kept the desk.
 That is correct.

I said that one could not upgrade from a 33 to a 44/48, that is was a box
swap as the backplanes were different. That is also correct, except for
one small detail. I remember in 1981 the CE laughingly telling me that we
could upgrade the 33 to a 44, but that the ONLY thing we would keep would
be the desk. Not only was the backplane different, but so was the power
supply and virtually everything else inside. This is not what I think of
when I think of upgrade. The only thing I am unsure of is this. We got
one of the very first series 33. It even had a huge floppy disc drive in
the door on the right, for backups. I am just wondering if the upgrade was
a big problem because we had a very early model 33.

Upgrading the 44 to a 48 and then a 58 only required that some cards be
exchanged inside the box. It did not require a new power supply and a new
backplane.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Hate to contratict you Denys, we started with a 33 and upgraded to a 48,
and
kept the desk.
Shirl

Wrong again. The series 33 and 30 were NOT upgradable to 44 and 40,
respectively. The 33 and the 30 were dead-end machines.
