I am remiss, I should have started this process a long time ago. I am
sending this
out to the entire 300-L list because I am sure that it affects almost
everybody with a
3000.

For those of you who don't know what the Enchilada is or was, it is a
proposal not
yet formulated to enhance Image to make it the data base of choice for
the 3000
well into the next century. There was/is a sub committee of SIG Image
to come up
with a proposal to HP to accomplish this. Unfortunately the sub
committee could not
agree on a finite proposal. As chairman of this committee since
Hpworld, I want to
start this up again. If any of you on the list need more history, I am
sure there is
something in the archives, although I confess I haven't looked. In
summary the task
was to layout a plan for the future enhancement of Image.

It is not necessary to specify any particular enhancement to realize
that almost any
significant improvement to Image at this point will require an expansion
of the root
file. At least there are many enhancements that have been discussed for
a long
time that require an increase in this size. These include
identification of all related
files to the data base and vendor related information. Therefore I
propose that we
ask if HP would consider doing the following;

1. Increase the size of the root file by X (X to be determined later)
bytes to
accommodate new fields that will be required.

2. For backward compatibility write a program that will convert a root
file to the new
size and vice versa, depending on the setting of an Hpvar.

The above would accomplish the following:

1. Set the stage for a discussion in the SIG and elsewhere as to what
enhancements need to be made and in what order.

2. Allow the increased area to be mapped and some of it set aside for
vendor use.

3. Allow vendors to use the area assigned to them for their own
purposes.

4. Allow the increased space to be mapped for use by future possible
enhancements.

This will be a big step toward many elements of the Enchilada. Your
comments are
solicited.
