A good place to start is Module 5 in Using HP 3000 MPE/iX:Advanced Skills
Tutorial
http://docs.hp.com/mpeix/onlinedocs/32650-90872/32650-90872.html
followed by Command Interpreter Access and Variables Programmer's Guide
http://docs.hp.com/mpeix/onlinedocs/32650-90493/32650-90493.html

In case you didn't know, all the MPE manuals are available at
http://docs.hp.com/mpeix/all/

One should note that command files have to some extent displaced UDCs,
although UDCs have some capabilities that command files don't (OPTION LOGON,
NOBREAK).
