I don't know about the British or French but most Americans don't live
within walking distance of anywhere. We have relegated our shopping areas to
the edges of our cities. We also tend to buy in larger quantities, a weeks
or months worth of food at a time. (If you ever see British films or TV
notice that all the homes have little refrigerators like we use in the
office.) This is not an excuse for not exercising but it is a reason for not
cycling for any reason but pleasure/exercise.

Anyway, good luck to Lance Armstrong and all the other participants.

The opinions expressed herein are my own and not necessarily those of my
employer.
