Tracy,

The best way to hold an image in IMAGE (or any database, for that matter) is
not to put the image into the database but rather just its file reference --
and let the accessing program go pick up the image file based on the returned
file name. This is a simple procedure and can be accomplished wholly in MPE
file space, without having to resort to POSIX.
