I've used this approach and had the same problem, and used the same
workaround. As I recall, diff(1) seemed to like variable-length record
files O.K., but often doesn't like fixed-length record files.
Then there's the problem of comparing numbered files, like COBOL source
files, when one or both files have been renumbered.
