sendmail is only part of getting an email from point 'a' to 'b'.

are you confident that <whatever> is originating the email is inserting the right characters?

in the same regard, you need to make sure that <whatever> is receiving the email has the capability to properly interpret special characters.

my research on the internet (google is our friend) showed that a lot of people couple sendmail with (perl) scripts to ensure that emails using special character sets get handle properly. (i found a reference on the itrc about this...you might want to try to find it....search for 'sendmail character sets')

finally, grep /etc/mail/sendmail.cf for 'bit'. there are setting for 7- and 8- bit. in my .cf file, these are uncommented. if yours are commented out, you'll need to follow the procedure i outlined earlier...adapting it to make that correction. - d

Thanks Donna I made the change, checked the cf file and it did remove
the '#'. I ran another test to my home account and it still converted the
characters an alt 103 'é' on the 3000 to another character in this case a
capital a with small circle over it.

I just don't know if this can be fixed unless there is a way of having the
receiving end open the email in a specific character set. The other way may
be to send the French email in HTML format using the HTML form &#xxx for the
special characters but I would have to figure out how to tell the recipient’s
email how the document should be opened.

I will keep plugging away thanks for your help
