When I migrated to the 967 (also from the 70 platform), I purchased a 7980
from HP remarketing and had them add the SCSI interface.  It works very
well.  I've only had one tape get tangled in the autoloader.
 
We used two 7978As on our 70s so our positive performance impressions
may be a little biased.
