Thanks to Michael Gueterman and John Burke for their helpful suggestions;
however, I'm still not getting it to work.  I patched the registry as
Michael suggested, and adjusted my smb.conf entry to more closely conform to
what John suggested, but to no avail.  The mpe user in question has a
user-password only (no account-password) and I've tried entering the
password at the client both with and without a trailing comma.

Here is what I hope is a relevant snippet from a debug level 3 log file:

11/04/97 14:58:46 invalid username/password for myshare
11/04/97 14:58:46 error packet at line 131 cmd=117 (SMBtconX) eclass=2
ecode=2 error string = Invalid argument
end of file from client

Anybody know what that second line "error packet" is about?  Anybody got any
other ideas for me?
