Sometimes the internal batteries go bad.
I suspect when they did a shut down, they also powered down, even if it
was only for a second.
If the intent was to only do a Restart, it may be avoided if they go
directly to maintenance mode with Control-B and RS. And DON'T turn the
key to Standby (presuming it a model that uses a key.)
